Background:
John Purchase PS has been implementing "Cultures of Thinking" routines and mindsets for some time. The school's focus in 2024 was to revisit their professional learning and to take new initiatives to ensure that a culture of thinking was embedded in their school.
In 2025, JPPS looked to extend this initiative and to focus more deeply on the key aspect of metacognition.

Problem of Practice 2024:
Are we developing a culture of thinking in our classrooms? - How is questioning activating critical thinking, curiosity and/or metacognition? - How are students communicating their thinking? |
Problem of Practice 2025: Are our classrooms enculturating students to become resilient, reflective and courageous thinkers?
- How are students encouraged to reflect on their thinking and learning ? - In what ways do learning tasks prompt students to question, critique, and seek deeper understanding? - How are students supported to take risks, persist through challenges, and respond to setbacks? |
The PRESENTATIONS
The 2024 and 2025 presentations were prepared for the network by Carolyn Wallace-Whelan
THE PRE-ROUND TASK 2024
In their current research, The Worldwide Cultures of Thinking project has focused on identifying 10 Guiding Mindsets that propel the development of a culture of thinking. For the 2024 round each school was asked to examine one of the mindsets and develop a resource to help grow the network's understanding of it as well as be a resource to share with the teachers of JPPS. Three elements were selected as the focus to best represent the concepts in JP’s PoP. The pre-round task is attached here: jpps_ir_task_t3_2024.docx
THE SCHOOL PRESENTATIONS 2024
MINDSET #2 Enculturation: by the JPPS Team
|
The John Purchase PS presentation asked what enculturalisation might look like in classrooms. In this practical presentation they describe many of the core components necessary for leveraging the 8 cultural forces.
|
The photos from our 2025 round show the rounds process in action. Check out the teaching/learning that scaffold the writing process for students. The network created images as to what enculturaturation would look like in classrooms .

QUESTIONING: BY THE OAKHILL DRIVE PS TEAM |
COLLECTIVE LEARNING BY THE BEROWRA PS TEAM |
|
In Mindset 8 "questions drive thinking and learning". The presentation by the Oakhill Drive PS team provided key messages about teacher and student questioning. The team planned a practical activity for network members based on a DoE developed unit of work. Network members collaborated to modify it by adding questions that would enable teachers to deepen students' understanding and promote curiosity.
|
In Mindset 6, "learning and thinking are seen as much a collaborative enterprise as they are an individual endeavour". This presentation, from the Berowra PS team, gives many practical examples of techniques for collaboration that teachers could use to enhance the collaborative nature of learning and make students' thinking visible.
