LEADING WITH TECHNOLOGY

What's happening in our schools

LOOK WHAT's HAPPENING IN OUR SCHOOLS!

Students at Vaucluse PS used podcasts to deepen their learning. These were linked into their Science lessons about Space. Lessons on using multi-media highlighted:
  • scripting and literacy skills (writing for audio is a unique narrative form)
  • presentation and technical skills (recording techniques and ability to speak confidently and handle audio equipment)
  • editing skills (using software like GarageBand or Audacity)
  • sound design (incorporating the special effects and music to enhance storytelling)
  • research skills (linking with curriculum areas)

At Naraweena PS students used Canva AI Image Generator to create images of characters such as Strong Hohn, Marlie and Allen from the book, "Rowan of Rin".  For this the teacher used several scaffolding strategies. Before beginning, the teacher supported students by re-reading some parts of the book. Students generated character walls - lists of adjectives and phrases, and then explored the similarities and differences between characters.

In creating the images using Canva, students needed to be precise in the vocabulary they used and in the instructions they inputted to the image generator. They repeatedly evaluated the images and refined their descriptions  until the image matched the "picture in their heads" of each character.

Berowra PS has instituted a program to highlight student voice in their school. Each year a Year 6 student media team is selected. Students submit an application to be in this team which meets regularly with a mentor teacher.  Media skills are developed and the videos that are created are embedded in the school's website.
