RATIONALE: Following their round in Term 1, the ODPS team planned a targeted change program. The round's data was used to identify the focus for change, and the mathematics syllabus to set the rationale for it. To ensure sustainability the school decided on a slow, narrow and deep focus with Number Talks the vehicle for changes to teaching and learning.
The complete rationale is shown in the slides opposite. |

TEACHER PROFESSIONAL LEARNING: Implementation for change began with Teacher Professional Learning with the deepening of understanding of the practice of Number Talks the focus. Teachers engaged in workshops; set expectations for their practice; and reflected on the changes to their understanding.
Data collection was used to inform all stages of the implementation and there were considerable changes to students' mathematical processes. |
PARENT LEARNING: In Term 3, the school held a "Parent Masterclass": ‘Number Talks and Number Sense’. Over 100 parents attended. After the session, parents participated in a number sense activity in classrooms with their children. Parent survey data revealed that all attending parents found the session helpful. Responses indicated increased parent understanding related to mathematical skills of communication, flexibility, and justification.
