WHAT ARE THE BIG IDEAS IN THE WORTHWHILE LESSON MODEL? PLAY THE SLIDESHOW
After spending some time embedding the "Worthwhile Lesson" model, through lesson observations our schools found that aspects of the pedagogy that needed greater emphasis were high expectations and challenge. We looked to Barbara Blackburn's model of rigour to guide our next steps. Click on the image below to check out the resources we used for our rounds that were focussed on the concept of rigour..
Our Instructional Rounds Network has undertaken several rounds with a focus on "Worthwhile Lessons". Our professional learning has been based on the model by Moss and Brookhart.
Our first round using the Worthwhile Lesson model was at Oakhill Drive PS in Term 3, 2019. The problem of practice was: Are our lessons worthwhile? Is the lesson tied to a curriculum outcome or outcomes? Is the lesson content based on a learning trajectory? Does the lesson meet student needs? The second round was at Thornleigh West PS in Term 4, 2019 and the focus was on one of the components of the Worthwhile Lesson, the "Performance of Understanding". The POP was:
How do the qualities of the task deepen thinking and learning? During our rounds we have collaboratively developed learning trajectories and worthwhile lessons for four curriculum areas.
In Term 4, 2020 Thornleigh West PS hosted the round. The problem of practice was: " Are our reading lessons worthwhile?" The focus of the professional learning was on ensuring challenge, rigour and high expectations.

As part of the Oakhill Drive PS Instructional Rounds (Term 3, 2019), participants were asked to complete a pre-round task which included reading the chapter from Moss and Brookhart's book, 'Finding the Worthwhile Lesson'. Using the 'Worthwhile Lesson Guide', participants then planned a worthwhile lesson in cross-school groups based on a chosen KLA (English, Maths, Geography or History).
