At TWPS teams of teachers work together with outstanding leaders agreeing on worthwhile outcomes, setting high expectations, knowing students starting and desired success in learning, seeking evidence about their impact on student learning and modifying teaching due to reflection is an embedded culture.
Teachers at TWPS ensure learning and thinking is at the centre of all that they do. This involves embedding high expectations and routines as a natural part of the learning environment. Creating a culture of thinking, provides a useful framework for shaping effective classroom culture. Routines and expectations for flexible classroom organisation - grouped, paired and independent learning are explicitly taught and monitored. Students are given time to think about and process information. Students need time to deepen their learning.
TWPS aims to build a community of learner involving students, teachers and the community. Learners are active participants and are responsible for their own learning. Learning and thinking is visible. Deep understanding is at the centre of learning, and where, for both teacher and students, thinking is visible, valued and actively promotes. Teachers are architects of learning and model learning to their students.
We focus on:
- Sustaining questions
- Deepening thinking
- Challenge thinking
- Actively listen
- Wait to allow for thinking
- Focus on learning not the work
Using our instructional rounds recommendations and findings the IR team celebrated the amazing dedication of teachers and worked together with them and the executive team to develop the next steps forward in our learning journey. The Executive team have been through a coaching model focusing around 'the big ideas', where we developed a school goal around our best hopes for 2019. All of the executive team have been involved in professional learning around Instructional coaching. Stage supervisors work shoulder to shoulder with teachers to develop goals and together research best practise, team teach and work through the Jim Knight Impact Cycle. TPL has been designed and implemented around the findings from IR. A check in around formative assessment to ensure all new teachers feel a part of our journey and to navigate teachers around the IR website, culture of thinking learning PODS facilitated by teachers who have undertaken training with Simon Brooks,
We currently have a team of teachers who form the Action Research team who work closely with Simon Brooks and members from John Purchase Public School to develop questions which are emotionally compelling for them and learn together with their students to uncover the answers to their question.
