BEROWRA  PS        2022

BEROWRA PS ROUND.                  TERM 2, 2022

PROBLEM OF PRACTICE
Are we developing students' conceptual understandings and skills in number?
  • Do students know what they're learning in number and its importance?
  • Do tasks provide opportunities to explore mathematical concepts and language?
  • Are we providing opportunities for students to reason, communicate and share their mathematical understanding?

THE BIG IDEAS IN NUMBER

The presentation for this round was prepared by Barbara Reynolds. It  contains some Di Siemon slides about the Big Ideas in Number, as well as an orientation to rounds and a refresher of our background knowledge. The pre-reading also focused on the Big Ideas in Number as well as a research on the important qualities of the mathematical task . Click here to download PPT and here for Berowra PS reading

REASONINg - THE HEART OF MATHEMATICS

A practical document, Assessing Mathematical Reasoning from reSolve describes the component skills for reasoning and how it can be assessed.  The second document, Reasoning in the Australian Curriculum, looks at the role of reasoning in mathematics, some advice for teachers, and provides an illustration of a task that requires reasoning.
Examples of students reasoning, which might promote professional discussions amongst teachers  can be found on the Marilyn Burns Maths website. Two examples are here:
